VLC Media Player is one of the most downloaded and used media players out there. Free to use, and has one of the largest codec databases for virtually all multimedia either downloaded from the internet, or just for playing your DVDs. Just about everyone recognizes the yellow and white cone associated with vlanplayer!
The Gom Player comes with everything and is easily the best quality and easiest to use player that is free! I use it for downloaded videos and just love it.
I have a 47 inch phillips HDTV, and I can play downloaded HD videos with the same quality as a blu ray disc player. I just run an HDMI cable from my pc to my tv and open the file on my tv and click play. It figures out the correct settings for each particular download, so I don't have to mess with trying to figure out the settings.
